About the School

Jack in the Box Montessori School provides nursery education in a happy, safe and stimulating environment, where children can realise their full potential and develop life skills. The curriculum combines Montessori teaching methods and the Early Learning Goals set out by the Department for Education.

Jack in the Box is located on Ashchurch Grove W12, conveniently situated for Hammersmith, Shepherd's Bush, Acton and Chiswick. The school is housed in Kelmscott Community Hall, an established nursery setting for the past 30 years.

Montessori Teaching

Through her research on child development in the late 19th century, Maria Montessori devised new teaching methods and materials. She found that children had an innate desire to learn and that between the ages of 0 to 6 years, they learned differently from any other time in their lives. She called this 'the absorbent mind'; a child goes through 'sensitive periods' in which the mind is more receptive, making it easier to acquire certain skills and concepts.

The Curriculum

The Department of Education's Early Learning Goals concern basic areas which every school should cover, such as personal and social development, language and literacy, maths, physical development and understanding of the world around us.

The Montessori teaching method encourages and develops a child's interest and independence through a wide range of exercises using specific materials, working individually and in groups. Children are encouraged to learn and develop at their own pace in a supportive environment.

At Jack in the Box Montessori School we combine the Early Learning Goals with Montessori teaching methods. Planned projects are an important part of the curriculum and children are encouraged to bring in items for 'Show and Tell'. Creative art is strongly featured, together with an interest in culture. We welcome the support and involvement of parents, particularly with projects.

Learning through free play is encouraged. Construction toys, arts, crafts and computers are all incorporated in the curriculum. Additional activities include cookery, Spanish, yoga and music.
